This 36 page zine recounts the neglected history of U.S whoreaphobic Anti-Asian immigration laws, the conversion of the Japanese sex trafficking “comfort system” during World War II to the U.S “kijichon” system, to the Korean War Bride movement, and finally the policing of Asian Massage Parlors. The zine is written through an anti-imperialist, PIC abolitionist, and sex workers (SW) rights/decriminalization framework.
Unweaving
Unweaving explores Rust’s tension between honoring traumatic histories and moving forward with, and despite historical trauma. This comic examines trauma as a product of systemic oppression and illustrates the ways in which these systems infiltrate our internal narratives and inform the behaviors of those who love us. Through the juxtapositions of the present and past, physical reality and psychological landscapes, Rust explores manifestations of mental health in the body and in the world, encouraging the audience to tune into to themselves mentally and physically. For this comic, Rust drew upon the influences of Tillie Walden’s ethereal style as well as Thi Bui’s family and identity centered narrative style.
